Coaches at the City of Leeds diving training scheme

Avalon Harold

I have been a member of the City of Leeds Diving Club for many years, previously as a diver and lately as a coach. I began coaching at the club three years ago, working alongside Annie Marwood and Charles Calvert with the Development divers. Prior to this I coached gymnastics at Armley Sports and Leisure Centre for four years, which enabled me to work with girls, aged 5-16 years old. This experience has helped me greatly with when preparing my divers for pool skills in the dryland. In high school I achieved a Dance Leaders Qualification that enables me to teach children aged 3-11 how to dance. I have achieved both a Level 1 and Level 2 Diving Coaching Qualification. I currently coach Mini A and a Learn to Dive lesson. I am a 3rd year student at Leeds Trinity University studying Primary Education in the Early Years (Age 3-7), and hopefully by next summer I will be a qualified Primary School Teacher

Ady Hinchcliffe

Ady started diving for Leeds as an age group diver in 1984 and competed regionally, nationally and internationally for the club in his diving years.  After retiring and moving south Ady returned north to coach in Bradford with Andy Banks in 1989 to pursue his coaching career.

Ady soon moved to Leeds to study at Carnegie (Leeds Met. University) in 2001, naturally made the move to the Leeds Diving coaching team. After graduating from University in 1994,  Leeds City Council offered him a full time post as the Senior Diving Coach for the Diving Training Scheme and the rest as they say is history.

Ady says, “In my time here at Leeds we have raised the standards at all levels year on year to the great results we see today.  We have achieved fantastically both domestically and internationally and have had representation at the last four Olympic Games. Roll on Rio! I am also extremely proud of the coaches that have been born/developed from being a part Leeds Diving over the years under my watch.  Key successful coaches such as Jenny Leeming, Marc Holdsworth, Vikki Tomilnson, Rebecca Lee, Sally Freeman, Tandi Gerrard and Joe Mezaros are just a few who have benefited enormously from our Club.  I have also developed and key partner in Edwin Jongejans who joined me in 2002 to strengthen the high performance side of coaching here in Leeds. Onwards and upwards!”

Adam Smallwood – Head Coach

I Started Diving at Bradford Espirit at the age of 13, where I had my first coach Fito Gutierez. I then later moved to the City of Leeds Diving club at the age of 17 where I spent most of my time coached by Marc. Around the age of 16/17 I started to coach alongside my diving for both Bradford and Leeds. Unfortunately at the age of 21 I had do retire from Diving due to an on-going wrist injury , it was around this time when I started to just coach at Leeds where I was given my first two squads.

In 2013 I became a full time employee for the council and now hold a big part within the City of Leeds Diving club training scheme, as well as coaching some new up and coming Junior Elite Athletes. 2013 also saw me make my World Championships debut as the Jamaican national coach in Barcelona coaching Leeds diver Yona Knight Wisdom.
